Introduction

In Hungary, EU requirements on cadmium are transposed into national law. The legislation has been laid down to protect the environment from cadmium contamination. Part of this legislation has direct relevance for products imported into the EU. This document describes these product-related legislative requirements:

  1. Cadmium restriction applicable to all products and product parts where cadmium is used to (1.1) colour specific materials, (1.2) stabilize specific materials, (1.3) plate specific products

  2. Cadmium restriction in packaging materials

  3. Cadmium prohibition in electrical and electronic equipment

Hungary has implemented the RoHS Directive into national legislation through Ministerial Decree 16/2004 (X.8.) of 08 October 2004 Restricting the Application of Individual Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment, as amended. Implementation date was 1 July 2006.

Key provisions of the Decree implementing the RoHS Directive are discussed in this report.

Defined Restrictions:
All articles: 0.01% by mass in specific plastics
Specified articles: prohibition (if used for cadmium plating)
Packaging: 100 ppm for sum of heavy metals
Electronics: 0.01%
