Energy Using Products (EUP) Webinar

February 22, 2006

European Union - Design for Environment

The Energy Using Products (EUP) Directive has created significant interest among companies implementing programs to reduce the environmental impact of their products, known as eco-design. The Directive (2005/32/EC) will set the rules for eco-design in the EU, and will cover electrical and electronic devices and heating equipment. Though it does not introduce directly binding requirements for specific products, the Directive will define criteria for making requirements.

In a first for EIATRACK, we have pre-recorded 3 presentations on EUP for a web-based seminar, or webinar. Professor Lucas Bergkamp from Hunton and Williams (Belgium) will provide an overview of the Directive and recent developments toward implementation, Dr Yoshiaki Ichikawa of Hitachi (Japan) explains the development of international eco-design standards and Dr. Aidan Turnbull of Environ (UK) will explain an eco-design case study.

This webinar is available for online viewing in three parts:

EIATRACK's European Union legal expert Professor Lucas Bergcamp (Hunton & Williams) sumarizes the current state of EUP legislation in the EU.

Dr Yoshiaki Ichikawa of Hitachi, Ltd., Japan convenes the International Electrotechnical Commission's Environmentally Conscious Design working group two (TC111/WG2) and talks here on progress of developing international Eco-Design standards.

In this case study, Dr Aidan Turnbull, Head of WEEE, RoHS and Eco-Design at ENVIRON talks about how Eco-Design benefited the Smiths Group.
